With a few false starts behind me, a couple finished degrees in my pocket, and a Ph. D. in progress, I’m on a mission to help students match with the perfect school and program for them.
I see education as a long journey.
Every course you’re taking is an investment you’re making in yourself, and it’s helping you get somewhere. As an instructor , I see students who are unsure of where they’re going, and students who know where they’re going but are unsure of how to get there. Spending my days helping them identify their goals and make their education a transformational experience at the same time, I know that students everywhere could use some help on their journey that goes beyond guidance counsellor-level advice.
I bet you’re thinking I had a transformational learning experience on the first try, right?
Wrong.
Actually, three out of the five schools I attended were not the right fit for me and my learning needs.
When I was in high school, I was a good student, played lots of sports, had lots of friends, and was part of the student council. I had all these things going for me. Nevertheless, I still made some mistake when picking an educational path.
The first school I picked, made me feel like I was just a number. It was a huge school, and I did not feel seen or encouraged as a learner. This was a jarring experience that negatively impacted my self-esteem.
The second school I picked was completely online. I needed to finish the first degree I started, but I didn’t physically want to go to school. I just picked a course that didn’t align with my educational path, signed up, and got in. Because it was self-paced, I never touched the textbook again. This was another lesson for me.
Next, I picked a third school because it was close to my workplace. This school accommodated working individuals, scheduling their classes after 6 pm most nights. I enrolled in the program not taking into account that I’m not productive in evening courses, and I had to drop yet another program.
In the fifth (and last!) school, I felt like I had finally found a good fit: an environment that was flexible with learning options and kept me accountable. I was so relieved to finally find the right school and program.
Once I took the time to do better research, I was able to make a more educated decision. I see now that I could have kept my confidence intact throughout post-secondary years. Though, by the time I finished my degree I knew exactly what was going to work for me, when choosing a master’s program and so I was able to make a better choice.
Why not save yourself this expensive and time-consuming trial and error?
Find the school and program that fits just right, the first time.
